Housing

About this page - Everyone needs a roof over their head. As we age we may need to downsize and go into a condo or an apartment. There are some really nice retirement villages in Niagara that can also be an option. If we have a disability and need care, there are also places that can take care of those needs. And, there are respite places where a person with a disability can go to relieve a caregiver who might like to go on vacation.
We don't know all of the places available and can use your help locating them. There are lists out there, yes, but most depend on organizational memberships the homes belongs to. We like to build a comprehensive list so everyone has the widest choice possible. Either click on the area you want in the index or scroll down for the entire list.

The Positive Step - Charlene Stratton
Tel: 905-680-1832 Fax: 905-680-2901; the positivestep@sympatico.ca; www.thepositivestep.ca
Specializing in non-slip matting for wheelchair ramps that works as well in walk-in freezers, kitchen work area, front steps, decks and docks. Used extensively by Community Living in Niagara. The matting is $16 a square foot and that includes installation in most cases. Consider the cost of a fall in work hours lost or in healing time and it's very reasonable. Charlene can also provide nonslip solutions for bathtubs, showers and all ceramic flooring including ceramic tile, marble, concrete, terrazzo, slate, etc. She can aso treat all tubs, porcelain or fibreglas so they will be nonslip.

The Care Guide
The Care Guide is Canada's most comprehensive and compact guide to seniors' housing and care services.  Everything seniors and caregivers need to know about making informed decisions on living arrangements and choosing a provider, whether it is in long-term care, assisted living, retirement residences, Alzheimer or hospice care or home health care, can be found in this 5 x 8 inch free glossy magazine. It also features related issues such as community support services, financial and estate planning as well as legal concerns and has a full page of phone numbers under such headings as General Information, Housing, Health & Wellness and Financial Resources.  The guide is updated and published every six months. You may visit the website at www.thecareguide.com. The publication is free of charge and can be obtained by calling
1-800-975-9736 or writing to: The Care Guide, 9 Cedarview Dr., PO Box 68230 STN BRM B, Toronto ON  M7Y 4W1

Active Adult Lifestyle Communities
There have never been as many choices for seniors’ retirement living as there are today. And with the emphasis on healthy lifestyles, seniors are living longer and enjoying keeping active. Retirement living has really come to life!
Active Adult Lifestyle Communities are springing up all over Niagara and comprise various models of residences: detached, freehold, bungalows and condominiums. As well as outright ownership, some are life lease homes while others are rental units. The following is a list of those we’re familiar with. There are a few here that are not exclusively for seniors but still offer everything you may be looking for. Take the time to visit different communities and check out all the amenities and see what they have to offer. Don't forget, you can always buy support service: caregivers who will come to your home to assist you in whatever way necessary.

Housing for people with disabilities
Niagara Regional Housing (NRH)

Ontario March of Dimes

The Ontario March of Dimes has accessible assisted living units in a variety of apartment buildings owned by Niagara Regional Housing (NRH). If you are a consumer of Ontario March of Dimes their support services are free. Please note that there is a waiting list for these apartments. The apartments are at Ridley Terrace on Louth Street in St. Catharines (20 units), Faith Lutheran Villa on Agar Dr. in St. Catharines, Scott Street Supportive Housing on Scott St., St. Catharines (four buildings - 12 accessible suites), Stamford-Kiwanis Manor on Ailanthus Ave. in Niagara Falls (12 units).  This is affordable housing with rents that are based on income.

NRH Owned Units and Other Housing Providers

In addition to the March of Dimes units, NRH and housing providers administered by NRH have an inventory of modified unit.  The degree of modification varies from unit to unit.  If you have significant mobility issues and rely on a wheelchair as your main source of mobility, you may be eligible for a modified unit through NRH or a housing provider. These units are also affordable housing with rents based on income.  For a listing of modified units and the type of modification, please check the Building Selection form under “Applying for Housing and Related Forms” on the NRH website at  www.nrh.ca or call 905-682-9201.

Building an accessible house from scratch

Quality Homes in Grimsby can build an accessible custom home for you and include everything you need for your specific disability. No ramps here and grab bars that look like tree branches, if you want them. It makes sense to have what you need in the beginning and not try to renovate to suit your needs and... it's less costly. There are model homes in Grimsby but they will build to your plans or you can use one of their many designs. Anything goes when it comes to changes. The house is actually put together in a huge factory in Kenilworth, ON and assembled on your lot after the basement and infrastructure has been put in place. They also have Sandra Thompson, a consultant, on board who uses a wheelchair full-time. She has also had the company build her a home and it is beautiful. For further information contact Howard Sher at 1-800-265-2648 or go to www.qualityhomes.on.
