Other Ways to Give and Get
This page tells you how to give items to a place where others in need can access it and how to get what you need. We may not know all of the places in Niagara that recycle or sell items so if you know of any we've missed, please tell us. And, If you know of a way to recycle, give or get items that fit the bill and cost very little or nothing, please e-mail us.
Community Care of St. Catharines & Thorold
The mandate of Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold is to provide programs that create a positive environment for people to support themselves and their families with dignity and purpose. Food, shelter and clothing are the main programs of Community Care, and even, on a limited basis, emergency medical, dental and vision care assistance.
Clothing Program
This program sees approximately 14,000 people a year receive free clothing. It is run by volunteers and depends on donated clothing from the community. Items distributed are clean and in good shape. With a cutback in United Way funding of $78,000 Community Care has to find ways to make up the loss.
Food Program
To access the food bank, participants will undergo an interview and must provide all the documents necessary to prove financial hardship. Clients are allowed to visit the food bank six times a year and receive a 3-5 day supply of food based on the family size.
Household Goods
A limited number of small items may be available for re-distribution, including linens, blankets, dishes and pots and pans.

Donating to Charities
It is common to want to donate to a charity when a person dies. Often their obituary will suggest that you donate in their name to a specific charity or the charity of your choice. Just as often, no address is given for the charity. All funeral directors have gift cards that enable you to give to a charity right at the funeral home but many people are also choosing not to go through a funeral home. On most of the websites linked below you can donate directly to the site.
We'll list names and addresses of local registered charities here. If you can help, please do. I'll start it. E-mail me at linda@lindacrabtree.com if you can add to this list and remember, it helps if it is the local branch.

Run by Gary and Jill Taylor, this concept takes donations of used medical equipment and assistive devices, thoroughly sterilizes it, and gives it back to those who can best use it. They have hospital beds, wheelchairs for adults and children, walkers, canes, bathroom aids including tub seats, shower chairs, bath lifts, seating cushions, grab bars, commodes, scooters, and all manner of sick room equipment. From time to time they have racing and extra large or small wheelchairs, pool lifts, operating tables, Stryker frames, stair-glides and syringes. If you need something, even if it's something remote and odd, why not give them a call.
And, if you have something along those lines you no longer need, why not donate it to them so it can be used by someone in need who doesn't have the money or insurance to buy it or doesn't qualify for government help or have the co-payment needed. A receipt for income tax purposes can be requested. The Taylor's also take truckloads of equipment up north to the native settlements where equipment is in very short supply.
If you receive something as a gift from the Taylor's and you can make a donation, please do. They have rent to pay. This is an excellent concept, saving the government millions of dollars. We hope it prospers.

Respite Companion Program
The Respite Companion Program provides quality in-home respite service for persons with dementia and those who care for them on a daily basis. The respite worker will provide supervision, companionship and meaningful activity for a few hours while the caregiver runs errands and takes some time for him/herself.
British Benefactor
And now, thanks to Mike Hogan, a 35-year-old bachelor who lives in England, the respite program caregivers get more than a couple of hours to run errands. Hogan provides the funds and Corinne Bernat, a resident of St. Catharines, does the organizing for caregiver day trips, made possible through the generosity of local companies who give them a discount on costs. Bernat is looking for additional help for transportation and entertainment venues for future excursions. A deal on a limousine would be most helpful, although two minivans (with volunteer drivers) would also help. Bernat would also welcome special deals at theatres, restaurants or wineries.
